bringing alive the King of Pop
Crowd screaming; the anticipation of seeing their idol live; and finally that moment when that silhouette appears making everything else insignificant. A description very famously related to a phenomenon that conquered a music genre on its own, introduced some killer dance moves along with an authentic wardrobe and left a legacy that will not be forgotten for a very long time: Michael Jackson the King of Pop. Be it the half-time at the Super Bowl in 1993 or the 25 year Motown label anniversary performance in 1983, which marked the debut of the King’s trademark moonwalk, the emotions surging through are palpable even via my 13-inch laptop screen.
His effect is such that it is no surprise to see people imitate his style and dance till date. The long hair underneath the fedora hat and the iconic silver glove is seen to be copied the most by those remembering him. This gave birth to a long list of tribute artists who very successfully don their idol’s identity. Amongst them is Mudassar Jackson, a Michael Jackson tribute artist based in Dubai. He has gained immense recognition in this field, bagging himself quite a few awards. Seeing his uncanny transformation into the King of Pop, one can safely say he’s on top of his game. GLOSS got a chance to speak to him and learn all about his journey and what’s next for Mudassar Jackson.
Tell us about your journey. When did you realise your interest and passion for Michael Jackson and what made you continue on such a niche path?
Since 9 years of age, I have been dancing and tearing my shoes either on roads, street or stages. During my school, I used to participate in dance, singing, writing, drawing and other creative activities. Once I danced on Michael’s track “Smooth Criminal,” that is when I realised that I am good at it and hence continue to chase my passion.
What made me embark this path of my dream, and push my limits further, was pure and simple love for Michael Jackson. I work hard on my vocals and have not had any sort of physical modification.
What is it about Michael Jackson that inspires you?
His genius of work overall. Be it dance, singing, wardrobe, creative ideas, humanitarian work but on top of all, his humbleness being the superstar and the entertainer that he was. He broke every boundary, made a remarkable history and showed the world to believe in dreams and be humble when one gets the reward.
How has the response been and what is your most memorable performance to date?
The response of the public has been indescribable, unbelievable and unimaginable. I had never thought that I could put smiles on so many faces and get a high calibre of respect and recognition. I highly respect every person in the audience, who gives his time to watch me. When I see a sea of people, I sometimes get teary eyed for their love and response. I value it wholeheartedly.
The most memorable performance for me was when I had performed “Man In The Mirror” live, the same way Michael did on his Dangerous tour in Munich, Germany in 1993. It was live with backing track for 8 minutes and I tried to justify his name. After the show, a couple came to me to tell me that watching Michael Jackson live in concert was their biggest dream and I had made their dream come true. That statement was like an Oscar Award for me.

You have won numerous awards but found your big break at MTV India Challenge of Talents 1999. What are the challenges you faced while trying to break into the industry and after gaining recognition?
Oh boy! I remember the organiser of the show “MTV India, Rhythms 1999, A Talent Show” called me over the phone. He came over to my house sat with me and said “I have witnessed Michael’s live concert in LA. I heard you do good. If you can do better, I will get you awarded by MTV for sure.” I didn’t know how he had come to know of me. I replied “I will not do better. I will do justice. Let you and the audience be the judge for it.”
There were 50 more participants including groups from schools, colleges and universities. It was in Dubai Creek Park Amphitheater. More than 7 thousand audiences were gathered. It was hosted by Nikhil and Mini Mathur from “MTV Chillout” segment.
I was jittery. I was worried as well as I was the only one for Michael’s tribute performance. I performed 3 tracks, Jam, Ghosts and Billie Jean. The stage was carpeted and I had to get on and off the stage because of that. However, by the end of the show, when the organiser went on stage to announce the award, I couldn’t believe I had won. I was shuddering with nervousness. I still cherish that moment.
There were countless challenges and troubles during that time but I was able to prove that our nation is far more talented than what people think. We need to channelise our talents in the right direction and stay put in our shoes.
What makes you different from other tribute artists who also imitate MJ?
I sing live either on backing tracks or with musicians, singers and dancers. I try to justify my performance. I live Michael’s moments when I am performing and if I can’t make people happy, I would happily get off the stage. That’s where I feel, I am different. Also, I don’t do self-acclamations unlike others stating “world’s best, world’s No. 1 and recognized by Jacksons.” I have the trophies and I state them publicly with pride.
How long does it take for Mudassar to turn into Michael Jackson and what steps do you take to get into character?
The transformation from myself to Michael Jackson getup can take from 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes max. That includes the wardrobe and makeup. I wear a wig which gives that final touch of looking like Michael. I don’t do face painting that many artists do. I prepare with a lot of rehearsals. I eat carefully. I listen to music very closely. I get the dresses custom made and make sure when I put them on, they should replicate Michael Jackson, on or off stage.
Being a Pakistani, how has it been representing that aspect of your life while interacting with others and the many shows that you have done?
It’s challenging. I am the only Pakistani tribute artist of Michael Jackson. I have faced many problems because of my nationality in this field. Especially when some of the high-end showbiz entities wanted to take me to India and the USA. Twice my visa to India was rejected and once for the USA. However, once people see me perform, they give me a lot of love and respect. Now, people take me seriously as I am a professional. I tell everyone with pride that I belong to Pakistan.
What advice would you give aspiring tribute artists?
Since you are giving a tribute to the real artist, make sure you do justice in every term as the audiences don’t like anyone disrespecting their favourite artist. Copying legends isn’t easy at all when you are on stage. Be humble. Be nice. Respect your audience. Respect every nation. Be strong and ready to take criticism well.
How has being Mudassar Jackson changed your life and what are your other goals?
My life changed when I wore the title of “Mudassar Jackson.” It has taken me various places across the globe. It has impacted my surroundings and dreams in positive terms. It has broken all those boundaries that were in my way for me to show my talent across the globe.
My goals are very normal. To be more creative. To be popular and with my popularity, help others too. Push limits of talents and work in movies as either a music director and perform with big names from each country of the world. To make my nation proud with each performance.
Lastly, your favourite MJ song?
A very tough and typical question. I swear I can’t tell you one, but off the top of my head, it’s “Thriller.” I love the way it’s done. It’s groovy, different and extraordinary. Quincy Johns and Michael Jackson both made a gigantic track and that’s why till today no one has been able to break this song’s popularity.
