ARINDAM BANERJI: On Fashion Styling And Choreography
Mumbai-based choreographer and stylist Arindam Banerji is the official choreographer for Miss India Worldwide and has worked with Bollywood celebrities such as Rekha, Sushmita Sen, Govinda, Kareena Kapoor, Mallika Sherawat and many more.
We got a chance to catch up with the ace choreographer and stylist in Dubai where he is working on various projects.
“I will always choose choreography over styling as I am a born dancer and I have an eternal love towards dance,” said Banerji about his preference.
When asked about which actor he most enjoyed working with Banerji said, “Though I have choreographed a lot of Bollywood stars, I think my experience with Govinda was the best. He is a great human being and is fun to work with.”
Choreography and styling are two very different areas of work. Banerji has made a mark in both. “Both are different zones. One is more into body language and expressing emotions and the other is more into vision.”
“It is not easy to transit from choreography to styling. Styling is to make things beautiful, it is hiding emotions under beautification and dance is expressing every emotion. Hence both are very different forms of art,” he further elaborated.
With several Western dance forms being used in Bollywood now, one wonders what the future holds for Bollywood dance. “I believe Bollywood dance has a great future ahead. Slowly it is making its grip internationally. It has a cultural base and western essence. It is a mix of several dance forms found in every part of India,” said Banerji.
Since we caught up with him in Dubai, it is a mandatory question to ask about how he likes the city and its people. “Dubai is a beautiful city. It is a hub of brands, and as a stylist, I appreciate that. I love shopping as well. The best part is that this city needs more people like us to give a direction to the young ones looking forward to doing something in the fashion industry. It is a pleasure to see them grow,” he said.

“In near future, I see myself as a director. I want to combine all my skills and experience and present it in one platter. I m looking forward to it.” Told Arindam on his future plans.
“I will suggest the budding stylists and choreographers, to take time, plan and think, spend a little time alone with their thoughts, so that they can create new material and express it properly. Do not copy or remix. This will kill real art and the same ideas will keep rotating. There will be no evolution.” He said.
